Fernanda’s internationally exhibited installations all incorporate interactive video and sound in novel ways. She’s the recipient of a Bronson Fellowship, Flintridge Foundation Fellowship and NEA & Ford Family Foundation Grants. At the American Academy of Rome, Fernanda researched and developed The Method of Loci, a multi-chambered installation combining sculpture and interactive video to investigate place-based memory. The Method opened at The Art Gym at Marylhurst University in 2013 and was an ArtForum Critic’s Pick. Individual rooms travelled to Currents 2012 and 2014, Festival de la Imagen in Columbia, and SOMArts in San Francisco. Fernanda’s interactive video installation, Generativity, was installed at Suyama Space in Seattle in 2016. As New Media Fellow at Open Signal, Fernanda developed Borderline, a multi-site project investigating climate change, mass migration and surveillance. Borderline (2017–2020) combines prerecorded video with surveillance of viewers through coding, creating many layers of connotation. In 2019, three separate iterations of Borderline were exhibited at Open Signal Portland International Airport, Disjecta, and the Portland Art Museum. In 2020, Fernanda’s Liminal Performance Space project was featured at New Art Fest in Lisbon, Portugal. Fernanda’s works with the Mobile Projection Unit (with Sarah Turner) were exhibited at the Portland International Film Festival, and the Virtual Venice Biennale. Connecting all of Fernanda’s work is the idea of the viewer as an active participant immersed in a prepared environment. Her projects bridge the divide between the digital and the real to create immersive time-based works that unfold in surprising ways.

L’Acqua è Vita

In L’Acqua è Vita, artists Sophia Wright Emigh, Jaleesa Johnston, Yunuen Rhi, Linda K Johnson, and Lisa and Juju Kusanagi merge imagery of movement with scenes of water in all its moods and forms. Also included in the video is a special commissioned ritual healing that Yunuen Rhi enacted at the Tia Juana River along the border between Mexico and the United States, and gestures of healing by all the performers. L’Acqua è Vita invokes the magical properties of water as the life-giving force that permits all else to unfold.
