About Of All the Ways to Point Up
The mapmaker interprets portions of what is, skewed by what they perceive. Maps demarcate relation, building a topography how differences are connected in space. Even the map itself often exists as a spatial artifact, where relational elements of a contained area are scaled to fit inside of the carte itself.
But maps are not directions, and it is easy to get lost if you don’t know how you relate to all the overwhelm of information.
I am searching for my bearings, releasing the need for accuracy amidst the blurry manifold interpretations of reality. Pondering whether previously charted territory is any better than uncharted territory. Hoping for a map forward, an attempt to find commonality between what I perceive and what you perceive. Learning to embrace being lost, not because I’m off track, but because I’ve stopped trying to get anywhere other than where I am.
ALYZA DELPAN-MONLEY (they/she) believes in the expressive power that can be accessed in the body through movement. Their work has been presented at Cafe Nordo (Jitterbug Perfume, Violet's Attic), On the Boards (solo:FEST), ArtsWest (Office Hour, The Last World Octopus Wrestling Champion) and Washington Ensemble Theater (Dance Nation, Teh Internet, Revolt.). They perform regularly with MALACARNE, DONNA and Tim Smith- Stewart and Jeffrey Azevedo. They are always searching for ways to brighten their surroundings with splashes of whimsy, human connection and goofy possibilities. Known for their quirky non-sequiturs and character-ridden theatrics, Alyza loves dancing in every context and is always excited to find the unexpected places dance can show up, burst bubbles and repurpose awkward into awesome.
